David Ris  > Journalism > New Orleans Flood Damage
Nancy and I took a day to visit some of the damaged areas in New Orleans. We visited the two homes where she lived in the Uptown area. Then went to the 9th Ward area, and finally over to the Lakeview area. Whatever you have heard, whatever you have seen, believe me, it is worse than whatever image you have in your mind.

David Ris > Over 500,000 cars were caught in the New Orleans area flooding. Thousands of of these destroyed cars are still lined up under the freeway. This scene went on for miles.
David Ris > This and the next several pictures were taken in the 9th Ward area. Complete devastation here.
David Ris > This brick home was one of the few left standing. The owner is asking that the home not be destroyed by clean-up crews. Note the water line: halfway up the roof.

David Ris > Lower Ninth Ward. Complete devastation. Before Katrina, this area had a high density of modest homes. Now all that is left is rubble.

David Ris > Last August, this was a street lined with homes. The Industrial Canal levee, which failed catastrophically, is visible in the background. The force of the water rushing in from the failed levee ripped the pavement apart. Only foundations of the homes remain.
All of these homes are now vacant, and some owners are attempting to sell.
