David Ris  > Journalism > New Orleans Flood Damage
Nancy and I took a day to visit some of the damaged areas in New Orleans. We visited the two homes where she lived in the Uptown area. Then went to the 9th Ward area, and finally over to the Lakeview area. Whatever you have heard, whatever you have seen, believe me, it is worse than whatever image you have in your mind.

David Ris > Many businesses remain closed. As you can see, this Uptown property has space available. Note the markings on wall which indicate that the property was searched on September 25, someone's pet was located.
David Ris > Nancy's second college apartment on Dante Street. The waterline here was just at the bottom of the door. Deep enough to get into first floor and cause significant damaged. This dwelling, which, like most homes in New Orleans, is now vacant.
David Ris > Dante Street, across the street from the apartment. Many families are trying to make due with FEMA trailers.
David Ris > St Charles Avenue streetcar line. Note that sign indicates that "it is the oldest continuously operated street railway line in the world". It is not operating currently, and is not expected to be in service until 2007. Extensive wind damage is the culprit.
David Ris > Many restaurants have re-opened. Unfortunately Camellia Grill remains closed.
David Ris > Nancy's first college apartment on General Pershing Drive.
David Ris > Water was deeper in this area, almost 5 feet at the base of the building. Nancy's apartment was up the stairs to the left.
David Ris > View from the porch where we used to sit in the evenings and watch the neighborhood. Now most of the houses are vacant, only a handful show any sign of repair activity.
David Ris > Again, on General Pershing Drive. FEMA trailer on left, abandoned car on right.
